June 1– July 11, Summer Reading Registration. Come by the Children’s Department to register for our Summer Reading Program. No phone registration, please. Special Programming
Saturday, June 2, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Summer Reading Kickoff Party. Join us for a fun-filled day full of inflatables, refreshments, face painting, games and more. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Monday, June 4, 2 p.m., Movie Matinee – Rio. All ages welcome. No registration required. Snacks served.

Tuesday, June 5, 2 – 3:30 p.m., Craft – Owl. Drop in anytime during the event. All ages welcome. Registration required. Registration begins two weeks prior to craft date.

Thursday, June 7, 10:30 a.m., Jacksonville State Drama Department. JSU will perform Cinderella’s Big Dream, a sequel to the original fairytale where Cinderella chooses to go to school rather than marry the prince. All ages welcome. No registration required.

Monday, June 11, 2 p.m., Movie Matinee – Mr. Popper’s Penguins. All ages welcome. No registration required. Snacks served.

Tuesday, June 12, 2 – 3:30 p.m., Craft – Dream Cards. Drop in anytime during the event. All ages welcome. Registration required. Registration begins two weeks prior to craft date.

Teen Happenings
Teen Summer Reading: Own the Night-The North Shelby Library Teen Department has all kinds of programs and activities scheduled for this year’s summer reading program — contests, comics, movies, crafts and more. Plus prizes and food! Registration runs throughout June. Reading logs are stamped beginning June 1.

Teen Summer Reading Kickoff! Monday, June 4,  6 – 8 p.m.; arrive between 5:30 – 6 p.m. Join us for a showing of Men in Black III (PG-13, 95 minutes) at the Rave Motion Pictures Theater at Lee Branch!! We will provide admission and refreshments for teens (entering 6th -12th grade) registered for the summer reading program. Parents and siblings are welcome to attend for $9 each. Must register by 5 p.m. on June 1 in the teen department. Payment for non-teens due at registration.

Battle of the Books Introductory Meeting, Thursday, June 7, 5:30 – 6 p.m. Do you have what it takes to be the champion of Battle of the Books? Teams of teens will compete in a Jeopardy-style competition at the end of the summer to find out how much they know about the six books selected by the librarians. Find out more at our first strategy session and earn extra points for your team!

Chef U with Angela Schmidt, Thursday, June 7, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Learn how to make a tasty treat. Win prizes, food served.

Gaming, Fridays, June 8, 15, 22, & 29,  2 – 5:45 p.m. Come to the teen department each Friday afternoon for open gaming on the Wii and with board and card games.

Movies- Mondays, June 11, 18, and 25, 5:30 p.m. Join us for an evening of popcorn, soda, and cinema.

Battle of the Books Strategy Meetings, Thursdays, June 14, 21, and 28, 5:30 p.m. Strategy sessions for each book will be held each Thursday from 5:30 – 6 p.m. One book will be covered at each meeting.

Fighting Crime, DEA Style, Thursday, June 14, 6 – 7:30 p.m. An agent will discuss how the DEA conducts investigations.

Teen Book Club, Tuesday, June 19,  5 p.m. The Teen Book Club will meet to discuss the The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex.

Fifth Annual Fear Factor Food Challenge, Thursday, June 21, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Do you have an iron stomach? Brave taste buds? Put yourself to the test with some new and unique food combinations. Scary food not your thing? Join us for a tasting of unusual sodas! Prize donated by Texas Roadhouse Pelham.

Super Smash Bros Brawl and Mario Kart Tournaments, Thursday, June 28, 6 – 7:30 p.m. Who will reign supreme? Sign up online to make the brackets.

Adult Summer Reading – Between the Covers

Saturday, June 2 – Thursday, July 26. To register, participants must be 18 or older and fill out the registration form at the desk. Don’t forget to pick up your registration packet. Prizes will be awarded weekly and a grand prize will be given at the end of Summer Reading.  Early registration begins Monday, May 21.

Wednesday, June 6, 2 p.m. Movie Matinee – Pillow Talk

Thursday, June 7, 6 – 7:30 p.m., Thursday, June 18, 10 – 11:30 a.m., and Thursday, July 12, 6 – 7:30 p.m., Downloadables Class. This class will cover downloading audiobooks & ebooks from the library using Overdrive, Freading and Adobe Digital Editions. Please bring the device you wish to use to download books. We will also cover downloading free music from Freegal. Class will then be open for questions about any other library resources or Social Media.

Summer Reading Programming

Summer Reading- As part of the North Shelby Library’s Summer Reading Program, the Mt Laurel Library will have all kinds of great programs and activities in June. Participants can earn prizes and the chance to win a bike by reading books. Registration for the reading program and book log stamping runs throughout the month of June. Summer activities include craft days, a cookies and ice cream social, and Skip Cain “The Magic Guy.”

Special summer programming

Dream Big, Read- Wednesdays, June 13, 20, 27, 2 p.m. for kindergarten through fifth grade. Drop in and register the week of June 4. Programs planned include Dr. Magic, Steppup from North Shelby Baptist Puppet Ministry and Chef U hosts cookie decorating time.

Own the Night- Thursdays, June 14, 21, 28, 2 p.m. for sixth through 12th grade. Programs planned include a craft project, a movie and Chef U hosts cupcake decorating.

Between the Covers, reading program for adults- Adults read this summer for an opportunity to win a Kindle.  They will also be giving away three goody bags as usual. In order to enter the drawing you must read six books. The library will draw first for the Kindle then for the goody bags on Friday, July 27. You can pick up the forms for the reading log/entry beginning June 1.
