Bring your family, friends and pets to celebrate our community and the Greater Birmingham Humane Society

On Sunday, Oct. 24 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Greater Birmingham Humane Society Auxiliary will host the annual Shower for the Shelter, a celebration of 127 years of dedication by the GBHS to pets and people.  This event will take place at the GBHS at 300 Snow Drive, Birmingham AL 35209.  Admission is free, so we simply ask that our guests bring a gift for the homeless pets at the GBHS.  The GBHS has relied heavily on this annual event to provide the necessary cleaning supplies, bedding, toys, treats, feeding supplies, and medical supplies.

Shower for the Shelter will provide fun for the entire family, including a Halloween costume contest (four-legged and two-legged), games & prizes, moonwalk, cat walk, refreshments, clowns, face painting, fun door prizes, and much more.

Low cost vaccinations and micro-chipping will be offered between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.  A special Blessing of the Animals will take place at 2 p.m.  There will also be a question and answer session with GBHS veterinarian Dr. Jodi Turner Bloch.

Additionally, October is the final month for the $100,000 ASPCA Challenge at the GBHS. All adoption fees are being waived during the month.  We need to find a minimum of 422 new homes for pets during the month of October. With your help, we can exceed this goal.  The shelter will be accepting donations in lieu of adoption fees, so come meet your “furry” best friend and give a wonderful pet a forever home.

Top 5 gift ideas for Shower for the Shelter are: gently used fleece blankets and large towels, kongs (hard rubber toys), cat toys, milkbone treats for the dogs, and cleaning supplies (such as laundry detergent, paper towels, etc).  Our most needed “large” items are: PCs with Windows XP or Windows 7 OS, (1) Mac OS X (v. 10.5 or later) Desktop or Laptop (must be able to run Adobe Photoshop), (1) Dyson Handheld Vacuum. To learn what other items are routinely needed, please visit our website at www.gbhs.org and view the “Wish List.”
